Digital X-Ray

X-rays are particularly useful for looking at structures that are dense - bones, for example, show up clearly in white. Lungs, which are largely air, appear dark, and changes in that pattern - fluid, infection, a growth - become visible. Abdominal X-rays can show intestinal obstruction, kidney stones, or abnormal gas patterns. Dental X-rays reveal decay beneath the surface and problems with the jaw that cannot be seen from the outside.

• The radiographer will position you carefully - standing, sitting, or lying down - so the correct area is aligned with the machine
• You will be asked to hold still, and sometimes to hold your breath briefly, to prevent image blur
• The X-ray is taken in a matter of seconds; no injection or sedation is required
• Images appear on the radiologist's screen almost immediately and are reviewed the same day

Results are sent to your referring doctor, often within hours. If an urgent finding is detected, the clinical team is notified promptly.

In most cases, very little preparation is required. A few practical points to keep in mind:

• Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and avoid metal accessories such as jewellery, underwire bras, or belts
• Inform the radiographer or your doctor if you are pregnant or think you may be, before the scan is taken
• For abdominal X-rays, you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours beforehand
• Let the team know about any medications or supplements you are currently taking
• If you have had previous X-rays or imaging done elsewhere, bring copies if available — this helps with comparison
