Meniscus Tears

Meniscus Tears

The meniscus is the cartilage cushioning the knee joint, and tears here range from small degenerative wear in older adults to acute tears from twisting injuries in younger, active patients. UMC Victoria Hospital's meniscus tear treatment in Kampala, Uganda, is tailored to both the tear pattern and the patient's activity level:

  • Diagnostic imaging
MRI to determine tear location, size, and whether it's repairable
  • Conservative care
rest, physiotherapy, and activity modification for smaller or stable tears
  • Arthroscopic repair
minimally invasive surgery to stitch the torn cartilage back together, where possible
  • Partial meniscectomy
trimming damaged tissue when repair isn't a viable option
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
guided exercises to restore knee strength and range of motion

Knee locking, catching, or a persistent ache along the joint line are common signs of a meniscus tear that shouldn't be dismissed as ordinary knee soreness.
