Cancer Oesophagus

Cancer Oesophagus

Oesophageal cancer forms in the tube connecting the throat to the stomach and often presents first as difficulty swallowing or unintended weight loss. It's broadly classified into squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, each with different risk factors and growth patterns. At UMC Victoria Hospital, our Department of Cancer offers oesophageal cancer treatment in Uganda that combines diagnosis with tumour-specific planning:

  • Endoscopy and biopsy
direct visualization and tissue sampling to confirm diagnosis
  • Staging
CT and PET scans to assess local spread and distant metastasis
  • Surgical resection
    oesophagectomy for early-stage, operable tumours
  • Chemoradiation
combined treatment for locally advanced disease
  • Nutritional support
feeding tube placement and dietary guidance during treatment

Persistent difficulty swallowing solids, even if gradual, should prompt an endoscopic evaluation rather than dietary adjustment alone. Book an appointment with our cancer specialist today.
