Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncology uses targeted high-energy beams to destroy cancer cells while sparing as much surrounding healthy tissue as possible. It's used both as a standalone treatment and alongside surgery or chemotherapy, depending on cancer type and stage. At UMC Victoria Hospital, our Department of Cancer offers radiation oncology treatment in Kampala, Uganda, supported by careful treatment planning:

  • Treatment simulation
CT-based planning to map the exact treatment area
  • External beam radiation
daily sessions delivered over several weeks
  • Brachytherapy
internal radiation for select tumour types
  • Side-effect management
skin care and symptom support during treatment
  • Follow-up imaging
assessing tumour response after treatment completion

Radiation plans are built around each patient's tumour location and overall health, since the right dose and technique vary considerably. Consult our cancer experts for further information and care.
